When I First Saw You #16

March 24, 2016

What is When I First Saw You?
When I First Saw You, or WIFSY for short, is a weekly meme created here on Sailing Through Books and co-hosted by Izel from A Bookish Flower and yours truly. It consists of sharing a first impressions of a book in the form of a made-up synopsis, so basically judging a book by it's cover yes.

How does it work?

Every week, a new cover is chosen and is shared here at the bottom of the page. You write a synopsis for this book with the cover and title as your only guide. Then, you compare it to the real synopsis and laugh at how off you were or congratulate yourself on your amazing deduction skills!
You are free to post any day of the week, but the weekly WIFSY post will be up every Thursday with a link up so you can share your take on the week's cover.

Hello everyone! I hope all is going well for you! On my side of the computer, things are alright. I'm still in a reviewing slump, so sorry about the lack of reviews on the blog lately, but spring is almost here and I can't wait to start wearing dresses again!

Reading wise, I'm currently making my way through Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman (which is SO good! You should totally read it!) and Le Petit Prince, for my online course. Not gonna lie, I should be doing homework right now, but I didn't want to be last minute again so here I am, writing this week's WIFSY post! Here is the cover!

Title: 100 days of cake
Author: Shari Goldhagen
Publisher: Atheneum Books
Release date: May 17th

My made-up synopsis

Zara's family has owned the local bakery for decades and every year, they participate in the state's baker's competition. They've always won first place for as long as Zara can remember, but this year might be different...

The school year just started and there's a new boy in Zara's class. Interesting at first, Zara learns that he's the son of the couple who just opened the rival bakery close to her family's business. Worst yet, they plan on entering the state's competition!

After learning that her mother is ill, Zara's life is starting to slowly fall apart. The only thing that's familiar anymore is the competition and she's the only one who can participate.

Two minor details: Zara might still have a crush on the new guy and she absolutely and totally sucks at baking.

Determined to make her mother proud, Zara will have to figure out a way to follow her heart as well as her head. But when did those two ever agreed?

The real deal

There are only three things that can get seventeen-year-old Molly Byrne out of bed these days: her job at FishTopia, the promise of endless episodes of Golden Girls, and some delicious lo mien. You see, for the past two years, Molly’s been struggling with something more than your usual teenage angst. Her shrink, Dr. Brooks isn’t helping much, and neither is her mom who is convinced that baking the perfect cake will cure Molly of her depression—as if cake can magically make her rejoin the swim team, get along with her promiscuous sister, or care about the SATs.

Um, no. Never going to happen.

But Molly plays along, stomaching her mother’s failed culinary experiments, because, whatever—as long as it makes someone happy, right? Besides, as far as Molly’s concerned, hanging out with Alex at the rundown exotic fish store makes life tolerable enough. Even if he does ask her out every…single…day. But—sarcastic drum roll, please—nothing can stay the same forever. When Molly finds out FishTopia is turning into a bleak country diner, her whole life seems to fall apart at once. Soon she has to figure out what—if anything—is worth fighting for.

Verdict

Okay. I so want to read this book it's crazy! Mental illness? Cake? Nice guy who doesn't give up? Finding something worth fighting for? Frankly, I don't see how this book could be bad. Obviously, it has nothing to do with my synopsis, which happens often let's be real, and I have to say that the real one wins over my made-up one hands down! I went with the easy route, I admit. #noshame But it could still make a cute story, right?
