When I First Saw You #22 -guest post by Jessica @ Princessica Books-

May 5, 2016

What is When I First Saw You?

When I First Saw You, or WIFSY for short, is a weekly meme created here on Sailing Through Books and co-hosted by Izel from A Bookish Flower and yours truly. It consists of sharing a first impressions of a book in the form of a made-up synopsis, so basically judging a book by it's cover yes.

How does it work?

Every week, a new cover is chosen and is shared here at the bottom of the page. You write a synopsis for the book with the cover and title as your only guide. Then, you compare it to the real synopsis and laugh at how off you were or congratulate yourself on your amazing deduction skills!
You are free to post any day of the week, but the weekly WIFSY post will be up every Thursday with a link up so you can share your take on the week's cover.

Hello my little cupcakes!

Today's post is important because of two things:

  • I have the lovely Jess, from Princessica Books on the blog with us today to participate in WIFSY! Her made-up synopsis is SO cool! You'll find all of her info down bellow!
  • GIVEAWAY UPDATES! The winner of our April giveaway is *drum roll* Melanie B.! Congratulation girl!
ALSO! Izel and I have decided to change things up a bit. Instead of doing a giveaway each month, we'll be doing one for each season, which means that the next one will be in June, just in time for summer vacation!

Now that that's all out of the way, I give this metaphorical keyboard to Jess! Enjoy!

My made-up synopsis:

In 15th century Europe, the race for exploration has just begun. There’s the famous people like Vasco de Gama or Francisco Pizarro, but no one mentions little Jack Lewis. The twelve year old prodigy who saved Christopher Columbus not once, or twice, but eight times to be exact.

But how did Jack even get on the Santa Maria? He always wanted to be a sailor, but with him being left-handed, there was really no hope for him. Left-handedness was always a taboo, especially on the sea. But, if there’s anything Jack learned in his twelve years of life: if you can’t beat them, then join them. And so he did.

Serving as a translator, navigator, and sometimes mopper, Jack was the first--and only--twelve year old sailor on Columbus’s ship. Join Jack and Christopher as they, or more like Jack, use their wits to talk themselves out of the hands of other pirates, use the stars to find their exact position, and fight with their hands against bandits.

The real deal:

Lucy Bluecrowne and Maxwell Ault are on a mission: find the three pieces of a strange and arcane engine. They're not exactly sure what this machine does, but they have it on good authority that it will stop the war that's raging between their home country of England and Napoleon Bonaparte's France. Despite being followed by mysterious men dressed all in black, they're well on their way to finding everything they need when their ship, the famous Left-Handed Fate, is taken by the Americans.

And not just any Americans. The Fate (and with it, Lucy and Max) are put under the command of Oliver Dexter, who's only just turned twelve.

But Lucy and Max aren't the only ones trying to put the engine together, and if the pieces fall into the wrong hands, it could prove disastrous. Oliver is faced with a choice: help Lucy and Max and become a traitor to his country? Or follow orders and risk endangering that same country and many others at the same time--not to mention his friends?

The verdict:

I was surprisingly right about a few things! Like for one, the setting of England, and two, a sailor who is twelve years-old! I’m actually super shocked that I got the age right. At first I thought this would be a Peter Pan retelling but I decided to make it a historical fiction. While writing my synopsis, I kind of wanted to link it to Meriweather Lewis, or half of Lewis and Clarke.

After reading the synopsis, I’m definitely intrigued. I’m always on the lookout for adventure books. I’m getting a bit of middle-grade adventure/fantasy type of vibe here..? I love the book is from the ship! I thought it was related to a character, haha! This one is now on my TBR!

And it's a wrap for this week's WIFSY guys! I hope you enjoyed it, Jess did an amazing job with this week's WIFSY! A story about the boy who saves Christopher Columbus? Sign me up! I'm not one for historical fiction, but I would totally read this book!
If you want to see more of Jess, you'll find all of her information bellow! And if I may, I strongly suggest you go and find her because she is a sweetheart and a GREAT blogger!

Jess is your local blogger, bibliophile, feminist, and a future cat-lady. She enjoys supporting her local library and absolutely adores indie bookstores. When she is not reading or doing any other bookish sorts, she is probably listening to Troye Sivan, tweeting (@PrincessicaOB), or doing schoolwork [yes, although she hates it, she is quite responsible]. Feel free to chat with her on Twitter, Goodreads, Instagram or email her at princessiccaaaa[at]gmail[dot]com. Yes, two c's and four a's.

Next week's cover:

A massive thank you to you Jess for accepting to be here on the blog with us today!
Have a great weekend lovelies!
