When I First Saw You #27

August 11, 2016

When I First Saw you, WIFSY for short, is an original monthly feature here on Sailing Through Books that consists of writing a made-up synopsis for a book based on its cover and title only. Essentially judging a books by its cover, yes. More details here.

Title: The odds of lightning
Author: Jocelyn Davies
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Release date: September 20th 2016

Hi guys!
It's already time for August's WIFSY, and hope that you enjoy this one! I had a hard time picking a cover for this one, but I think I made up a pretty good story this time. I won't make you wait ant longer, here it is!

My made-up synopsis

People get struck by lightning all the time, nothing new there, especially not for Roan who's been unlucky enough to get hit by lightning twice already in his seventeen years of existance. But what is it they say? Third time's a charm? For Roan, it's about to be a little lest charming and a little bit more freaky.

When Roan gets struck by a lightning bolt for the third time in his short existnnce and then wakes up the next morning seeing seven different scenarios at the time, the only thing he can think of is "as if".

After a confusing day, Roan understand that he and the six people who look exactly like him lookalike scattered around the world have been struck at the same time, creating a bond between them that allows each of the seven boys to see through the eyes of the others.

Just when Roan thought his luck couldn't get any worst, one of his twin accidentally kills someone, forcing him, and the six others including Roan, to be on the run. Now, the only thing Roan can think of is "as fucking if".

The real synopsis

A bolt of lightning inspires an incredible journey in this charming, magical realism adventure that takes four teens on an all-night journey through the streets of New York City.

Extraordinary things happen when we least expect them.

Tiny, Lu, Will and Nathaniel used to be best friends. Then life-defining events the summer before high school tore them apart. Now, three years later, they hardly talk anymore. Nathaniel has become obsessed with winning the prestigious science scholarship that his genius older brother once won. Will has risen from anonymity to popular soccer star. Lu grew into a brash, impetuous actress. And shy, poetic Tiny has slowly been fading away.

But fate weaves their lives together again the night before the SATs, during a wild thunderstorm that threatens to shut down New York City. And lightning strikes.

Before they know what's hit them, the four teens embark on an epic all-night adventure to follow their dreams, fall in and out of love, reconcile the past, and overcome the fears that have been driving them since that one lost summer. And by the time the sun rises, odds are they’ll discover that there’s a fine line between science and magic, and that the mysteries of love and friendship can’t be explained.

Verdict

I knew from the start that my story would not, at all, match with the real one. It really doesn't. It doesn't matter though, I think both synopsis sound good!

The real one is pretty cool. Kind of cliché for a YA book, but still sweet. My made-up synopsis took an unexpected turn as I was writing that last sentence. I'll say that's it's not my best in terms of writing, but it is one of my favorite in terms of story!
